Social infrastructure is foundational services and structures that support the quality of life of a nation, region, city or neighbourhood. This includes any infrastructure that goes beyond basic economic functions to make a community an appealing place to live.

On parle aussi d'infrastructure pour désigner l'ensemble des installations nécessaires à une activité, à la vie en un lieu. [...] la présence d'une infrastructure sociale dans une communauté vise à l'amélioration des conditions de vie des populations bénéficiaires. Ce sont des installations nécessaires et utiles pour le milieu et qui contribuent à l'épanouissement des individus. De ce fait, on peut parler d'infrastructures sociales lorsqu'il s'agit par exemple d'une école, d'un dispensaire, des logements sociaux ou de tout autre édifice qui ont été construits pour améliorer les conditions de vie des populations.
